BOTH SIDES TOUR XV -- Jeb Stuart's Route to Gettysburg, Phase 1
Saturday, October 24, 2015
Follow the Confederate Cavalry Commander as He Begins His Controversial Ride around the Union Army in Virginia
The Both Sides Tour will follow Stuart from Piedmont Station in Fauquier to Rowser's Ford on the Potomac. Next April we will pick up the cavalry in Seneca, Maryland, and follow it to Gettysburg. Visit the sites of Stuart's battles with Union cavalry along the Blue Ridge that protected General Lee's main force, which already had begun marching North in early June of 1863. Learn about Stuart's meetings with John Singleton Mosby (including a stop at historic Yew Hill) that resulted in a plan to split his cavalry for another ride around the enemy's rear. Did Stuart have Lee's blessing? What obstacles did he face? Was he unduly delayed? We'll examine all those issues on the ground where the decisions were made. We'll stop for lunch at the Golden Corral in Manassas and spend the afternoon riding from the Occoquan to the Potomac.
Start the day with coffee and donuts at the Museum, 6121 Franconia Road in the Franconia Governmental Center. Board a comfortable, rest room-equipped motor coach for the trip to the sites as well as lunch, gratuities, fees and a McDonald's snack card on the way home.
