Passing of Hughes Camp's Former Commander Tim Apgar
Dear Missouri Division and Hughes Camp Compatriots,
As Darrell Maples reported yesterday, Tim Apgar passed away yesterday after his long battle with Leukemia. Let's all keep his family in our thoughts and prayers, to include his wife Sue, Daughter Mindy, sister in law and UDC member Trish Spencer, and brother in law and Hughes Camp member Jerry Spencer.
Tim was a long time Commander of Hughes Camp. My time frame is rough, but he served Hughes Camp in that capacity from about 2006 until around 2012-when he retired from Independence Power and Light and retired to the lake area, living in Versailles, Missouri. His wife Sue was a born and bred Versailles person I believe, and her mother, Rita Hammand, lived there until this last May when she passed away. Rita was a long time UDC member. Tim and Sue were able to be close to Rita to cae for her in her later years.
Tim was a staunch defender of our Confederate history. Tim was a new member to the SCV in 2005 or 2006, when Hughes Camp was in need of a new Commander. New member or not, Tim was willing to jump in and volunteer to run for that position. As a Commander, he was a consummate professional and his managerial skills from Independence Power and Light helped him in running a well organized Hughes Camp ship. Our membership blossomed under his Command, growing 20 members or so to well over 60.
Tim attended nearly all functions such as the Reunions, Lee Jackson and Secession Day Dinners. He was also a great financial supporter of our Camp and Heritage Defense Fund efforts. Tim went the extra mile for our organizations.
Tim spearheaded a grave marking project at Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, where the camp marked over 20 Confederate Graves. His research of who needed markers was extensive. He worked well with the cemetery sextant there. Woodlawn is owned by the city of Independence, and Tim's strong Independence ties to the city aided greatly in us obtaining that level of cooperation.
After Commander retirement, Tim served as a Western Brigade Commander I believe.
Tim's funeral will be in Versailles, Missouri. The arrangements are not final yet but will be handled by Kidwell -Garber funeral home in Versailles. Tim will be buried in the cemetery that is on W Hwy as you head south out of Versailles. It's maybe 3/4's of a mile south of the square. Tim always joked to me that his cemetery plot there was their future lake home!
http://www.kidwellgarber.com/contact-kglocations/facilities-and-directions
We will know tomorrow what days etc the funeral will be. I'm thinking somewhere between Tuesday to Thursday this week. Jerry Spencer told me yesterday that since Tim was not a suit and tie guy, Sue is thinking about burying Tim in his Confederate Frock Coat and embroidered shirt she had made him, along with his slouch hat. They do plan on having Confederate Flags present. I asked Jerry, if he thought Tim might like a Confederate Honor Guard volley salute. Jerry is going to ask Sue and Mindy about that.
I have often wondered if an honor guard salute would be appropriate for us SCV guys at our funerals. On one hand, we are not Confederate Soldiers, but on the other hand, we have done a good job of honoring our Confederate soldiers, and if it has been our life and passion to defend our heritage, I believe our Confederate Ancestors would be proud to have us do that for our members, as that still keeps their traditions and memory alive.
So, while I don't know if it is wanted yet for sure, I'm looking for 4 plus volunteers that have uniforms and can handle a musket firing, to volunteer for this duty, as honor guard. If you can do that somewhere along the line of midweek, please respond to me, then I'll keep you posted from there.
God Bless Tim and his family.
Sincerely yours,
Larry Yeatman, Adjutant, Hughes Camp 614

MO House Bill 2476 -- Missouri Heritage Protection Act of 2016
Gentlemen,
Missouri House Bill 2476 has been filed by Representative Warren Love. Attached is a copy of the bill. Please note - this is by no means of a guarantee of ANYTHING. As with all bills, it must clear several hurdles. It must receive several "readings", then be assigned to a committee, get voted on and passed by the committee, before being brought to a vote of the House. It can also be amended during this process as well. It would then have to pass the House before being moved to the Senate.
This bill is probably not perfect, but it is a start. Let us hope it does not die in committee and gets to the floor and beyond. Let us also thank Representative Love for his efforts and hard work.
I suggesting that you contact your State Representatives at this time and let your voices be heard. Again this is:
House Bill 2476 - Establishes the Missouri Heritage Protection Act of 2016 to preserve any state historic military monument or memorial, marker, designated veterans' grave marker, and statutorily designated monument or memorial.
I am also copying Bruce Hillis on this as he has worked hard and also understands the Missouri Legislative Process probably better than any of us.
I will continue to work very hard on this and keep you posted as to any developments.

Missouri Division - SCV

Frank Adams passed away this morning
I am very sad to inform everyone that Frank Adams passed away this morning.
He will be missed by me a lot as he was friends with my past family from
Atherton Missouri. Frank Adams was a member of the B/G John T. Hughes Camp
614 in Independence Missouri. He was a Grandson of Colonel Adams (to the
best of my knowledge). Colonel Adams fought for the Missouri Confederate
Military during the invasion of Federal troops in Missouri during the War
for Southern Independence. Details for the visitation and funeral will be
in the Kansas City Star either Saturday or Sunday. Frank Adams will be missed.

Missouri State Guard Flag coming down at Lexington
Gentleman,
I just spoke with Commander Maples and am sending this out on his behalf. Commander Maples has spoke with Rep. Warren Love, who is an SCV Member and Mo. State Rep, about the Missouri State Guard Flag coming down at Lexington. The order to remove the flag came down to the Lexington site from the head of the Missouri State Parks-Bill Bryan. He takes his orders from the Department of Natural Resources, who takes their orders from Gov. Nixon.
Here's what our starting response will be, please hammer your State Reps and Senators, and the Governor's office complaining about the removal of the flag. I would suggest to tell them that you will not be disenfranchised as a voter and it's not acceptable to not have representation. Also, that while there is a State statute that says only the US, Missouri, and POW flags can fly at State owned facilities, there is also something called the status quo, in this case the Missouri State Guard has flown at Lexington for years with no complaints. And since it has been flying all along, that is the status quo. The Governor has changed the status quo with no debate, public comment period etc. Be blunt, tell them to put the flag back up, and that you will not allow further attacks on our families, history, heritage, and that you won't allow our history to be erased or lied about. You could also urge them to pass legislation that protects all monuments, flags, historical sites to be protected. We've urged this for 15 years now, and they've sat on their duffs and never brought it to the floor for a vote, and now everything is under attack due to their lack of action.
Here is a link to find your State Rep and Senator: http://www.senate.mo.gov/LegisLookup/default.aspx/leg_lookup.aspx
Here's a link to email Nixon: https://governor.mo.gov/get-involved/contact-the-governors-office
Call him or mail letters to: Office of Governor Jay Nixon
P.O. Box 720Jefferson City, MO 65102
Phone: (573) 751-3222
Last, Commander Maples says he will call for an emergency executive cancel pretty quick. If Camp Commanders could be prepared to be there that will be great, so look for a message from the Commander soon on that.
Feel free to send this to friends and supporters of history, heritage, Veterans and freedom of speech. If there are those that read this that don't care about the rights of Confederate Descendants, stand with us, because sooner or later the tyrants will come after something you do care about! To defend Confederate Veterans, who are American Veterans by Federal Law, is to defend all Veterans.

Confederate Heritage
Good Morning Elliott's Scouts,
I have been involved in several discussions, meetings and events in regards to attacks on our heritage. The question is "what can we do" and this is your opportunity to take action and help. Sign the petition as a first step.
Anyone can sign the petition but what we need most is Missourians because each State is going to have to take action in their own state if we are to have success. It doesn't stop with the flag and our monuments are now under attack as well as our reenactment hobby or passion.
Please solicit others to sign the petition and do it now!
I just signed the petition, "Missouri State House and Missouri State Senate: Protect and leave in place all existing Civil War monuments - both Confederate and Union - as well as all Civil War flags and/or flag displays, and to restore all Civil War flags that previously flew or monuments that were in place at historic sites.."
I think this is important. Will you sign it too?

Rudi Keller Is An Agenda Driven Hack. More Over A Glorified Tabloid Reporter.
Here is a link to a story in today's Columbia Daily Tribune. Caution is advised as you read this article since it would seem to be heavily slanted in favor of the non-biased media's typical polarizing agenda. When the
original interview was conducted, he was very unprofessional and absolutely rude towards the Missouri Division Commander. He maintains a demeanor of a yankee liar. Some of you may have had good
relationships with him in the past, but now I urge you use caution should you are ever confronted by this glorified
tabloid reporter.
Please do not hesitate in sending your comments to the editor for this news rag.

There ought to be a battle flag flying on every members front porch
Unless one is ashamed of his heritage or a coward, it would seem to me that now more then any other time, there should be battle flags flying on homes and displayed on vehicles. Let’s just cut to the chase here. We can choose to cower to political and socialists manipulations, (I’m too scared to display the flag…might upset my neighbor) or we can fly the flag many of our ancestors died for defending liberty and freedom and be PROUD to display it.
There ought to be a battle flag flying on every members front porch, every day, 365 days a year. Hughes Camp will be happy to sell you one if you don’t have one.I will provide a bumper sticker with a battle flag on it FREE to any member of the Missouri Division who will display it on their vehicle if they are too tight to pay a dollar for it. I will even pay the postage for the extreme tightwads out there.
I’m not one to mince words. It is time to man up and fly the flag.Tim BorronMissouri Western Brigade Commander

Stewart Stone Dedication in Columbia, Missouri
I wanted to share the attached program for the William Robinson Stewart Stone Dedication in Columbia, Missouri on 23 August 2014. The Col. James J. Searcy Camp #1923 did a great job and the stone looks excellent! I love our Guerrilla and Confederate History but am most proud when monuments or stones are placed remembering our men. I love the small confederate flags that decorate our graves on Memorial Day. For many years at Forest Hill Cemetery Confederate Flags decorated Shelby's grave and many of the Guerrillas graves. The last couple of years there have been none.
This was a great project and thanks to all of those involved. Russ Devenney and I were in Irving, Texas at a Sons of the American Revolution District Meeting and unfortunately missed the ceremony. I plan to take a trip down to visit in the near future.

William R. Stewart Tombstone Donation Fund
Friends,
Yesterday was the Quantrill Society Reunion and Commander Mark Stuart visited us to inform us of a Searcy SCV Camp project in Columbia Missouri. The project is a memorial marker for a Quantrill Man, William R Stewart that lies in an unmarked grave. A $300 contribution was approved and check written.
I am sending this email to you and ask that you forward on to others in your organizations/societies that care and support Confederate and Guerrilla memorials. Consider contributing $5 or $20 or whatever you can to the project. I think the important thing is to send something to the Searcy Camp and show your support.
While identifying and marking our southern graves is important there is another reason to provide support to the Searcy Camp. There are factions in Columbia that have prevented the SCV from marching in parades. In addition they have prevented the SAR and SUV from participating in their efforts to stop the SCV. The memorial and ceremony is our chance to speak out with our support. We won't be silenced!
Across our country our men that fought in our 2nd War of Independence or defended their homes, family and communities are under attack. The flags are refused the opportunity to fly over Confederate Cemeteries and parks named after the heroes of the South are being renamed to erase their memory and history. This is an opportunity to help. Many of us that descend from bushwhackers/guerrillas had our families almost wiped out but we are still here and we still remember.
Thanks for forwarding and/or contributing.

It Pays to Learn the Truth

These men all belonged to the Missouri Partisan Rangers, a homespun band of brothers that bravely laid down their lives to protect and preserve their hearths and homes in Missouri during The War of Northern Aggression . . . a title that most accurately describes this bloody conflict when the facts of history are brought to light. Today, however, only those that fight abroad for the US military are deemed brave and heroic, while those that fought for the South are quickly dismissed as misguided rebels and slavery mongers.
Long dead and buried, they have also been long demonized and buried in an obscure corner of history. Many of their monuments here in the show-me-state are also quite obscure, like the one below, which is hidden in a small batch of woods on a lonely hillside well off the beaten path in southern Ray County. I have visited this monument numerous times, as it is useful in contemplating the hour we now live, a somber lesson in the bloody cost men have paid to be free. A lesson that makes most of us uncomfortable, since it speaks to self sacrifice, a willingness to lose all for the sake of one's children and true friends.

Though it may be hard to read, it states at the bottom -- "oh, smooth the damp hair over their brows; they are pale and white and ghastly now; and hide the wounds in their gory breasts; for their souls have fled to their final rest." Our souls will soon do the same. What will our ancestors say about us; what will they write on our monuments? That we did everything we could to avoid discomfort and loss while making and passing unto them the disaster that now devours them? How long shall go on drawing lines in the sand while retreating from the public square?
These men were regular folks like you and me; they had families and dreams, which nearly all lost to the ravages of corrupt men and governments, empowered by a religious zeal to conquer and control their fellow man in the name of "freedom and justice for all" . . . a topic that should surely have our utmost attention given the encroaching messianic state of the growing federal government, the progeny of the same that destroyed the South some 150 years ago. Like so many across the nation, those that survived the ravages here Missouri gave honor to their ancestors who some 75 years before bestowed upon them the freedom they so dearly fought for, the same freedom for which they greatly mourned the loss of, like we see demonstrated in the tattered postcard below.

The right hand side states: This postcard is sent as a souvenir of the "Free State of Ray" and as a reminder of the good old days of Missouri. Should we forget the example of our forefathers and the words of wisdom and common sense that come down to us from those happier if not better days of the past? It was postmarked some 43 years after the conflict ended and was mailed from a small, nearly extinct town not too far from where I live here in Ray County. My county was known at one time as "the Free State of Ray," a concept totally foreign to the messianic-state minded masses that make up America today. The infamous "border ruffians and bushwhackers" that defended Missouri rightly understood what their forefathers gave them, a constitutional republic of united States, where counties exercised true freedom.
Like I was, most Americans have been well indoctrinated in the public fool system where they were taught to hold these same men as monstrous rebels to the noble, glorious American state, who deserve only our vigilant contempt and shame. Even Christian homeschooling curricula teach the same garbage. To be frank, I am both ashamed and appalled at the ignorance of many Christians when it comes to the history of our nation and state, who above all people should know the truth. Yes, these men were sinners like all of us and made mistakes, but who hasn't? It is so easy to point fingers in self-righteousness ignorance, but have you ever taken the time to learn the true history behind them? It will behoove you to learn what drove these men to take the desperate actions they did, for someday soon we will all likely find ourselves driven to the same desperation. The answer will give you tremendous incite into how and why America has come under the tyranny it has since the War of Northern Aggression . . . as there is a direct connection between the two.
I can tell you firsthand that it truly pays to take the time and effort to learn the real history of America, especially through the only lens that can accurately focus on the truth, the lens of the Word of God, the Bible. Why the Bible? Because it alone teaches the truth of the real nature of mankind --- not one of inherent good and moral virtue which the state presupposes in deifying itself as the only savior of the masses ---- but rather one that is inherently fallen and utterly depraved, a life of certain death that can only find true life through the Lord Jesus Christ, and none other. The bloody dark history of mankind teaches, without exception, that without the merciful intervention of the Lord through the Gospel of the Kingdom mankind always tends towards death, tyranny, and sorrow. And if you think that secular, "religion neutral" (read pagan) man can reestablish a free society and just government by his own economic and political actions ---- such as many libertarians expouse ---- than you like them will learn the painful lessons of ignorance and denial of the truth according to the glorious gospel of our King and Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ (1Tim. 1:8-11).
Don't be willfully ignorant, take the time to learn the truth through the lens of Scripture. You cannot afford not to, especially in the desperate hour we now live.

2013 Missouri Secession Day Dinner
Gentleman,
Hope all are doing well!
Could you all start circulating the attached flyer (2013 Secession Day Dinner Flyer.pdf) via your Chapter and or Camp newsletters, or via your email systems to your members? All help in that area would be greatly appreciated!
I'm thinking I need to send a newsletter out to all our members and if so, will put this flyer in that newsletter also. That said, if each of you could send me a short article about what your chapter has done or accopmlished this year, even if it's things you've done in conjunction with your associated Camps.
But in the meantime, I'd like this flyer to get as wide of circulation as you can give it, I just received the speakers subject etc today, so we're behind on advertising!
Thanks for all you guys do! If you could, please give me a reply so that I know you received this ok!

Message From Commander Maples
Gentlemen,
The Col. James J. Searcy Camp will be hosting a very special medal presentation on October 16th - a Wednesday evening at their regularly scheduled Camp Meeting at 7:00 p.m. Several years ago, I was fortunate enough to come across a Southern Cross of Honor Medal, that the UDC presented to Confederate Veterans. As it turned out, the soldiers names had been inscribed and I was able to find his service records, he was a young Confederate soldier from Boone County , Missouri . As fate would have it, I put the medal on loan to the Boone County Historical Society Museum , and a picture was also put on the Searcy Camp website... and a great-great grandson saw this picture and made contact with the Searcy Camp and myself. After a bit of discussion and verification of lineage, we have decided to get the medal back in a descendant's hands, where it belongs. Unfortunately it should never have gotten out of the family and ended up at an antique mall, but sadly, those things happen.
The great-great grandson is named Dale Smith, and he is coming all the way from the State of Utah . He is so excited and has already joined the SCV, the Searcy Camp in particular. We will also be inviting memebers of the UDC, since they were the original presenters of this medal. The press will also be invited to cover this special event... and alas, I will even be putting on a suit and tie for this event! The Searcy Camp and myself wish to invite any and all members of the Missouri Division to come and share in this special presentation and to welcome Dale Smith to the SCV as well. Uniforms would be awesome and really give the event a true Confederate feel.
The presentation will take place at the Boone County Historical Society Bldg./Museum on Wednesday, October 16th, 2013. I would ask that one of the Searcy Camp members post the address and directions to the location. More information will most likely follow, but please make plans to be there for this event if you can. Please share this information with your camp memberships. The time/date is tentative at this point, but will most likely hold true.

Message from Camp Adjutant Larry Yeatman
Gentleman,
Wanted to give a reminder to guys who can make the monument dedication this Sunday. The event starts at 3 PM. Would like guys to get there at 2:20 pm so we can get our act together. Basically, I need 6-8 men who will act as color guard and honor guard. Come with a musket and three rounds. Come looking like Shelby 's men, as Handly was a Shelby rider. I'd say butter nut and cav boots.
I've attached the program. It says it is on Rt YY. YY is 4.6 miles south of I-70 on 13 hwy. You'll turn east on State Rt YY and go about 4 miles to the Zion Hill Methodist Church and Cemtery. Supposedly it is on the north side of the road.
If guys that can make this would, respond to me that you can. I would say I'm currently short of my 6-8 man goal. My email is larryyeatman@msn.com
Bob, can you send this to all Scouts on the off chance I get some more takers. Robert Capps said he might be able to do this.
My cell is 816-728-2291, for anyone who has questions, and I will send out finalized directions, at least you know roughly where it is for planning purposes.

I will try to send an email with a street address, but so far I do not have one and I can't find the church in searching the web. I think it's a small country type church.
Thanks!

Good press from 2013 Higginsville Memorial Day
Hello all,
With the discussion about the confederate flag, and Higginsville's Confederate Memorial Cemetery, I just wanted to show a very positive newspaper article (which is attached as a jpeg) from the June 5, 2013 edition of the Platte County Landmark (a local paper from the northern edge of Little Dixie). This paper has a pretty good reach into Kansas City, and a substantial readership, and featured a full color photo of the cemetery with numerous Confederate flags on the front. The write-up featured what went on at the Higginsville Memorial Day, and did not dance around the subject of what our Missouri Confederate soldiers stood for. And in the end, there were no irate letters to the editor over this story – just the opposite. There was a lady who wrote a letter saying how happy she was that the topic was covered without any bias.
I for one can't help but think that the assaults on our flag and our ancestors is from a very small, but vocal minority who have managed to get themselves into leadership positions – and the rest just go along with the flow because they don't know any better. However, if enough of us speak up and show our resolve RIGHT NOW all across Missouri in regards to this, there's a good possibility we can make a difference in stopping future posturing and acts of oppression against our communities. If our ancestors stood up, I think we can have the guts to do as well – albeit in a small way - by writing letters to our newspapers, local leaders, educating our neighbors, and flying our flags whenever we can!
Thanks!
Matthew

Br. Gen. John T Hughes Camp #614, Sons of Confederate Veterans 2013/2014 Renewal Dues
Dear Compatriot,
It’s that time of year to renew our memberships in the SCV. This will pay our dues for the Fiscal Year 2013. As always, the Camp appreciates your support! If you could, take a few minutes now to return this to us.
Hughes Camp has had a good year, our meetings have been well attended, and we’ve gotten out in the public some. Our Roster currently stands at 52 members, which is the same as last year. We gained some
but lost a couple to transfers etc.
Your renewal is appreciated, we have a really solid and growing camp.
Keep up the good work!
Sincerely yours, Larry Yeatman –Adjutant larryyeatman@msn.com

LAURET FOR ATM COMMANDER - 2014
Gentlemen of the Army of Trans-Mississippi,
With the recent exciting and very successful 118th National Reunion of our Grand O...rganization behind us, it was a pleasure and honor to serve you as your Councilman, to see old friends, to put faces to the names of many I have made email contact with during my first year as Councilman and meet and make new friends. I hope that those of you who attended left Vicksburg as excited and fired up as I did. Wonderful thing, those Reunions, they have a knack of getting the membership pumped up and allows us to see first hand how our organization works and that there are many that share the common purpose to defend the memory and honor of our Confederae Ancestors with sincerity, grit and determination. All those things, and my desire to continually serve our organization, has led me to the desire to step up once again and serve you, the men of the ATM, as your Commander in 2014. I am proud to announce my candidacy for and am fervently seeking the position at the 119th Annual Reunion which will be held next year in North Charleston, South Carolina.
As Councilman, I have been very involved on the General Executive Council with many issues affecting our organization. As many of you know, Vision 2016 has been on the front burner as we seek ways to increase our membership at a time where we seem to be slipping on both recruiting and more important, retention! I still see the Vision as a viable goal to not only increase our membership, but to strengthen in many different
ways our organization and our quest to fulfill The Charge. It is my belief that, as we move forward through the Sesquicentennial of Our War for Southern Independence observance and with the Vision as a plan for development and success, the SCV requires its members to step up in ways we have never considered to serve the efforts and goals of the organization. I am prepared to continue to do that! I am also very excited at the prospect of "taking the offensive" as was proposed by CiC Givens and seemed to really fire up the membership at the Reunion! My first year on the General Executive Council as your Councilman has been enriching and opened my eyes to the many important things going on that affect our organization and require the attention of members ready and able to take on the task!
If you want someone with the success of the SCV and the ATM in mind, someone with a proven track record of dedication to service on all levels and someone ever mindful that all we do is for the honor of our glorious Confederate Ancestors, I ask for your support in sending me to serve as your representative as ATM Commander on the General Executive Council in 2014. Semper Fidelis and God Bless our Confederation!
Your Obedient Servant,
Charles Lauret
