The surrender was finalized on July 4, Independence Day, a day Pemberton had hoped would bring more sympathetic terms from the United State. Although the Vicksburg Campaign continued with some minor actions, the fortress city had fallen and, with the surrender of Port Hudson on July 9, the Mississippi River was firmly in Union hand and the Confederacy split in two. President Lincoln famously announced, “The Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea.” The Surrender Commemoration will take place at the Old Court House Museum at 10:00 am.
