Gentlemen,
Please see the message I received from
the Iowa Division - Sons of Confederate Veterans. I realize that money
is tight everywhere, every camp and most likely every Division, not to
mention our own personal pockets. With that in mind, I'm hesitant to
ask for any dollars at this time, but I can't help but come back to the
reason we exist as an organization... our Confederate ancestors. Here
is what I am suggesting: 10% of what the Iowa Division is needing would
be $200, and I think that would be a very welcomed donation. I think
that if just a few of us could come up with $10 or $20 each, we would
have the $200 in no time. I will donate $20 to start, and I will be
happy to take any other donations from individuals or camps, no matter
how large or small. All donations would be forwarded to the Iowa
Division in the name of the Missouri Division - SCV. Please consider
this, it is a truly nobel cause, the Iowa Division is not a large
Division and any help we can provide will be very appreciated I'm sure.
Please
let me know if you would be willing to assist, and again I will be
happy to act as the receiver of the funds and forward them to the Iowa
Division.
Confederate Regards,
Darrell L. Maples - Commander
Missouri Division - SCV

----- Forwarded Message -----
Commander Maples,
Greetings
from the Iowa Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. As you
might know, the Iowa Division has become the unofficial caretakers and
guardians of the approximately 2,000 graves of Confederate soldiers who
were interred and died at the Rock Island (IL) Arsenal Prison between
December of 1863 and June of 1865. Each year, on Memorial Day, the
Division places Confederate Battle flags before each of the headstones
(photo below). and offers a memorial service for our ancestors who are
buried there. This is held in conjunction with the Memorial Day service
at the Rock Island National Cemetery nearby. We have the full support
of the National Cemetery Administration. This is quite a lengthy
service . . . reenactors, musket and cannon volleys, members of the UDC
and the Order of the Confederate Rose, and a guest speaker. This year,
we were honored to have National Lt. Commander Kelly Barrow as our
speaker. Next year, Commander Michael Givens has agreed to be our
speaker.
We have been offering this Memorial Service
for the past 30 years or so. As you might imagine, the wear and tear on
the flags is quite harsh . . . each year, we try and replace 50-100
flags from our quite limited Division funds. But, the current supply
has now reached such a tattered state that we need to replace the entire
inventory. The Ruffin Flag Company has offered us 2,000 12"X18" flags
on a 30" pole for $1 each . . . a total of $2,000.
We
are writing to the Missouri Division to ask if you would be willing to
contribute to the cause. There are 197 Missourians buried at Rock
Island Confederate Cemetery . . . we have indicated names below. We are
writing to each Division Commander, asking for that Division's support.
If you are willing to make a contribution, you may make the check
payable to: Iowa Division SCV and mail to me (Ronald Johnson, 915 Iowa
Street, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613. We hope that you will be able to
support our efforts to honor our ancestors.
Best wishes for a good summer!
Ronald Johnson
