Politics & Our Tax Exempt Status

Compatriots,

From time to time I hear different discussions concerning what the SCV or UDC can or cannot do as a 501(c)3. The following link from the IRS is to inform each member the answer the question above. I would encourage you to share this with your members and members of other heritage organizations. Please learn the law and use it to your advantage.

SCV Headquarters Working Diligently to Process Mail Requests

Gents,

I've received word from SCV Headquarters that they are beginning to make some headway processing new member applications and renewal of dues payments.  With all the recent activity regarding our beloved Confederate Flag and all things Confederate, membership is up dramatically.  Headquarters has been absolutely swamped.  Last week, they just began to process September mail, so you can see the mountain of mail they are working through.

PLEASE BE PATIENT... this is a problem, but a "good problem."

Thank you very much.

SCV Responds to MLK Statue on Stone Mountain

Sons of Confederate Veterans
Georgia Division

PRESS RELEASE

SCV logo

SCV RESPONDS TO ATTEMPT TO PLACE MLK STATUE ON STONE MOUNTAIN

(ATLANTA - October 12, 2015)    The Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans responded today to the proposal by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association to erect a monument to MLK, former black civil rights activist.  This decision by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association is wholly inappropriate in that it is an intentional act of disrespect toward the stated purpose of the Stone Mountain memorial from its inception as well as a possible violation of the law which established the Stone Mountain Memorial Association and charged it with promoting the mountain as a Confederate memorial.

The Venable family, which owned Stone Mountain in the early 1900's, leased the face of the mountain to the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1916 for the purpose of creating a carved memorial to the Confederacy.  The UDC contracted Gutzon Borglum, who later sculpted the Mount Rushmore carving; after the work was halted due to a disagreement with Borglum, the carving remained unfinished for several decades.  As the state began to discuss interest in reviving the memorial project as a state project, the Venable family deeded the land to the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial, Inc. in 1956.  Two years later, in 1958, the state of Georgia purchased Stone Mountain; and the General Assembly created the Stone Mountain Memorial Association expressly to maintain the mountain and all adjacent property as a Confederate memorial and complete a portion of the original design for the carving.

The act of the General Assembly which created the Stone Mountain Memorial Association specifically states the park, including both the mountain and all adjacent property, is to be maintained and operated as a Confederate memorial (OCGA 12-3-191).   The erection of monuments to anyone other than Confederate heroes in Stone Mountain Park is in contradistinction to the purpose for which the park exists and would make it a memorial to something different.  The park was never intended to be a memorial to multiple causes but solely to the Confederacy.  Therefore, monuments to either Michael King or soldiers of any color who fought against the Confederacy would be a violation of the purpose for which the park was created and exists. The opinions of the park's current neighbors and opponents are of no bearing in the discussion.

Furthermore, the erection of a monument to anything other than the Confederate Cause being placed on top of Stone Mountain because of the objections of opponents of Georgia's Confederate heritage would be akin to the state flying a Confederate battle flag atop the King Center in Atlanta against the wishes of King supporters.  Both would be altogether inappropriate and disrespectful acts, repugnant to Christian people.

URGENT! CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S REMAINS AT OAK HILLS

Date: October 6, 2015 5:04:27 PM
Subject: URGENT! CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S REMAINS AT OAK HILLS

Gentlemen,

With all of the difficult news we've had to deal with in recent months, I believe I have some GOOD NEWS to share with you.  The Veterans Administration (V/A) has finally agreed to reinter the remains of what appears to be a Confederate Soldier - whose remains were found along Wilson's Creek at the Battle Field site.  Let us rejoice in the fact that a human being will be given the dignity of being laid to rest.  The soldier will be laid to rest in the CONFEDERATE SECTION OF THE NATIONAL CEMETERY AT SPRINGFIELD, MO.

Here is a portion of the Press Release I received today:

______________________________________________________________________________

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) would like to inform you
that on October 17, 2015, the Springfield National Cemetery will conduct a
committal service for a Civil War soldier whose affiliation cannot
conclusively be determined.

In 2011, the National Park Service (NPS) discovered the unearthed remains
of the unknown Civil War soldier at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.
Because NPS administers the national battlefield, they conducted an
investigation into the origin of the remains but were unable to determine
the individual's identity or whether he served for the Union or the
Confederacy. The Secretary of the Interior made a request to the Secretary
of Veterans Affairs for burial of the unknown remains in Springfield
National Cemetery, which was approved.

The committal service will begin at 10:00am at the cemetery rostrum and
continue to Grave #286, Section 1 South. The gravesite will be marked with
a headstone that indicates the soldier is "unknown". VA anticipates that
attendees will include Veterans, Civil War re-enactors, local state and
federal partners as well as members of the general public. The committal
service will feature remarks by Springfield National Cemetery and Wilson
Creek Battlefield officials and will include funeral honors.

Under 38 United States Code 2404(h)(1)(C), families may display any
religious or other symbols during an interment or committal service.
Because the remains of this Civil War soldier are unknown and family cannot
be identified, there will be no display of religious or other symbols,
including display of any historic flag, during the October 17th committal
service. VA and the Department of the Interior will make guidance available
to attendees.
___________________________________________________________________________

As you can see, there will be NO FLAGS allowed -- No Battle flags or any other flags except for the modern flag of the United States of America (50 star flag).  WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS WHATSOEVER - THIS IS THE V/A's POLICY AND WE CANNOT DISPLAY ANY FLAGS.  Historically, the Battle Flag was most likely not present at the Battle of Oak Hills, but rather the 1st National Confederate Flag.  Although we wish we could display our flags, we must take this as it is at this point:  A Confederate American Soldier is getting funeral honors and will be laid to rest in the CONFEDERATE SECTION OF THE CEMETERY.  Again, let us take this as it is and honor this man.

I urge you to attend this ceremony, I and many other SCV members will be there, and this is a chance to honor a man that stood for what he knew to be just and right - and lost his life as a result.  Please make every effort to be there for this ceremony to honor this man... a soldier and a hero.

It is also hoped that at a later date, the MO Division can do a remembrance ceremony of our own... those details will have to be decided upon at another time.

Please share this email with your camp memberships immediately.

Confederate Regards,

Sons of Confederate Veterans say they’re preserving history, not racism

BY SARAH GISH
On a warm day in August, a couple dozen people gathered for an afternoon picnic at Shawnee Mission Park.
Under the shade of a shelter surrounded by leafy green trees, two men cooked burgers and brats on a charcoal grill next to a row of tables topped with red plastic tablecloths and a summery spread of sliced watermelon, barbecue-flavored potato chips and sopapilla cheesecake. The weather would have been perfect if not for occasional gusts of wind that whipped through the grove and threatened to topple the three flags fixed to portable poles next to the dessert table: an American flag, a Kansas flag and a Confederate battle flag.
The picnic is an annual event for the Major Thomas J. Key Camp No. 1920, a local branch of theSons of Confederate Veterans. The nonprofit organization for male descendants of soldiers who fought for the South in the Civil War has 98,000 members worldwide, including 1,445 in Missouri and 480 in Kansas. And its ranks are growing.

It is a sad day when militant bigots can persuade a people to do wrong. And possibly calling this person a bigot is too kind. Trying to lead Southern Black folk down the same path of reconstruction that led the way for a people who had no understanding of how they were being used as a weapon to break the spirit of the only man that ever cared for them in lieu of the caste that bore them to slavery in the Southland of America;"the Southern White man".

And even worse finding support from those who have nothing to add to the diatribe but emotional bigotry with no desire for truths.

Bottom line; it is tantamount to sacrilege for any Southern Black to align themselves against the true legacy of their ancestors who stood loyally with the Southern White man only to have that loyalty and trust almost pushed completely  asunder during the 12 year period of reconstruction as they were used as the weapon against their homeland as the stealing, rape, and murder of the State and individuals continued by the carpetbaggers, scalawags and politicians who used the Black vote to stay in power.

And now once again the historical enemies of his ancestors have sent his siblings South to prey upon those who are not knowledgeable about the body politic that bought a man here as slave who became friend and family to a man he called Master. Or the historical facts that led to the building of monuments to their bravery in face of overwhelming odds defending their homeland that was illegally invaded by those who cared not for the law of the land so spelled out in the Constitution, or the people of the South; freed or indentured.

I shall prepare an Open Letter & Open Report . God bless you!

Help Rescind the Shrine Potentate's Order

   Sons of Confederate Veterans

Compatriots and friends,
On 10th day of August, 2015 Jerry G. Gantt, Imperial Potentate of Shriners International issued Special Order #4 prohibiting any Shriner (in an official capacity), or Shrine unit to display a Confederate flag in public or in private,  including in Shrine temples, AND prohibits any Shriner (in official capacity) to participate in ANY event where a Confederate flag is displayed.

This Special Order is a slap in the face to the 70,000,000 descendants of Confederate Veterans (also now considered by Federal law to be US Veterans) whose forbearers loved, served and were protected by the Southern Cross.
But, the consequences of this action are anticipated to be farther reaching than just the Shriners.  We anticipate parade organizers, and other groups to refer to this Order as a reason that a Confederate Flag should not be displayed at their event(s) or in their Fraternal, Veteran, or Civic Association halls.

In short, this Order MUST be rescinded, now!  We must make our voices heard.
Here are a couple of quick actions you can take today to help:

1.     Sign a petition here.

2.    Forward the petition on to your friends, family, fellow camp members, and fellow veterans, and ask them to sign, including sharing on your social media.

3.    If you are a Mason or Shriner, you can let your Worshipful Master, Potentate, or York or Scottish Rite Bretheren know that you are unhappy with this disharmonious action.

4.    Contact IP Gantt and share your opinion.  His Executive VP is John Piland at 813-281-0300 x 7637 e-mail:  jpiland@shrinenet.org.

Tell the Imperial Potentate to rescind his order! Although the good works of the Shriners are appreciated, Potentate Gantt's action is disrespecting your family and that you are offended, and that he should re-consider his decision.

For more information please contact David McCallister, Florida Heritage Operations Chairman at 813-778-1202 or drmmystery1881@gmail.com.
