Va Flaggers Lexington Report: Flagging Friday

Greetings Patriots! We have much to share about the incredible turnout, events, and experiences during the Lee-Jackson Holiday weekend in Lexington, Virginia. This will be the first of several reports, in an attempt to inform, inspire, and properly thank all of those who had a part in making it the biggest and best ever!

FLAGGING FRIDAY:

Ever since the City Council voted to ban ALL flags from city light pole flag stands (except the US flag, Va State Flag and non-existent Lexington City Flag), the Va Flaggers have taken to the streets of Lexington on the State Lee-Jackson Day Holiday, which is the Friday closest to Robert E. Lee's birthday. This Friday, BY FAR, was our best ever, with more folks attending, and more opportunities to educate and change the hearts and minds of those willing to listen, and stand up to those who refuse to hear or accept the truth regarding Lee and Jackson, their flags, and the men who fought and died beneath them.

We started the day with 54 folks meeting at Jackson Cemetery for instructions, information, and an invocation, asking God's protection and blessing on our endeavors. Armed with flyers, flags, and the determination of our ancestors, we took to the sidewalks of Lexington, spreading out and taking positions at city light poles from the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery stretching down Main Street and over to Washington & Lee University. It was a beautiful sight to behold, looking down from Main at the flags of our forefathers lining the streets of the city once considered "The Shrine of the South". The weather, ominous just the day before, was almost perfect. Temperatures reached the upper 40's, with sunshine and a gentle breeze to lift our flags throughout the day.

At 1:00 pm, we gathered just a few blocks from the city center on Route 60 to raise the first Lexington Memorial Battle Flag, as reported earlier. Our numbers continued to grow, as over 60 folks attended the dedication, and then headed back to Lexington to resume flagging.

By the time we left the Lexington sidewalks at dusk, over 80 people had joined us, many flagging for the first time, and all reporting very positive exchanges and experiences with citizens, tourists, and students throughout the day. We printed 350 flyers and were completely out of "ammo" (the term coined by our own Sgt. Troutman for our literature) before the day was over!

Exhausted, but galvanized by the incredible turnout and success of a very long day, we met at Country Cookin' (by invitation of the good folks there!) and counted over 100 in attendance, double what we had reserved, as more folks came in that evening. After a great meal and last minute instructions for Saturday, we retired for the evening with great anticipation, realizing that the influx of folks who could not take off work to be with us Friday would mean even more flags and Flaggers on Saturday.

Va Flaggers: Lexington Interstate Flag Update and Call to Action!

The town of Lexington, Virginia has effectively turned its back on its rich Confederate heritage and history. In September of 2011, Lexington City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Mimi Elrod, voted to ban ALL flags from display on city light pole flag stands (with the exception of the US, State, and non-existent City flags) rather than allow the flags of Lee and Jackson to fly for several days leading up to and during the Lee-Jackson Day state holiday, after the complaint of ONE citizen and to appease ONE Russian Professor at Washington and Lee University. In July of 2014, Washington and Lee University President Kenneth Ruscio bowed to the demands of SIX Washington and Lee University Law Students who threatened "civil disobedience" if the period correct battle flags were not stripped from the chamber in which the "Recumbent Lee" monument resides, in the LEE Chapel on campus, where General Robert E Lee and his family are interred. Washington & Lee officials capitulated to their extortion-like threats, even though the flags were placed in the mausoleum in 1930 and could only be seen when entering the chamber to pay respects to the beloved General. It seems that the town of Lexington, and the leadership at Washington & Lee University have chosen to dishonor the men who, when called by the Commonwealth, gave everything to defend her. Once eager to have the honor and privilege of being the final resting place of two of the greatest men who ever lived, the town of Lexington, Va is now the subject of scorn and an ongoing boycott by thousands of angry Southerners, who would otherwise flock to the once great city to pay their respects.

The Virginia Flaggers are determined to ensure that Lee and Jackson receive the honor and respect they so rightfully deserve. Our efforts in Lexington, and the overwhelming support we receive there, have proven that the majority of the people in town, and especially in the surrounding counties, wholeheartedly DISAGREE with the actions taken by these recreant individuals, and support our efforts to return the flags and restore the honor. With this in mind, we placed an ad in a local Lexington newspaper, looking for land to erect an Interstate Memorial Battle Flag in or near Lexington. We were thrilled with the number and quality of responses we received.

Last week, we were finally able to get out to Lexington and finalize a deal on not just one, but TWO locations for Memorial Battle Flags in Lexington…one, high on a beautiful, clear, highly visible hill on Interstate 81 just outside of Lexington, and another just outside of town.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, including over $1,500 from the men of several camps in the Texas SCV, and many other contributions received over the last several months, we currently have the funding in place for the purchase and installation of a 50' pole and battle flag on the site on the edge of town, AND a 50' pole and flag on I-81.

HOWEVER, with an additional $4,000, we could order a new 80' pole for the I-81 site, which we believe is what we REALLY need for the biggest impact and most effective statement. A 20x30 flag for the I-81 site is already paid for and in hand, thanks in large part to generous gifts from the men of the Sgt William A. Hamby Camp # 1750, SCV, Crossville, TN, and the Admiral Raphael Semmes Camp #1321, SCV, Oxford, MI.

When we let our folks know of this development last weekend, two of our own Flaggers (who have asked to remain anonymous) stepped up with a challenge to match any and all contributions received over the next few weeks, up to $1,000 each! Thank to their commitment and sacrifice, we are already halfway to our goal!

This means that if we can raise just $2,000 in additional contributions before December 31^st, we will be able to order the 80' pole and have both sites complete with Battle Flags flying in the Virginia breeze for the Lee-Jackson Day state holiday on Friday, January 16^th, and Lee-Jackson Day celebration in Lexington on Saturday, January 17^th, 2015.

Va Flaggers: Old Soldiers' Home Veterans Profile: Rev. Moses Drury Hoge

The Virginia Flaggers are pleased to announce the release of the third in a series of profiles of Confederate Veterans with connections to the Old Soldiers' Home, on the grounds of Confederate Memorial Park in Richmond, VA.

For over three years, the Virginia Flaggers have forwarded the colors, twice a week, on the sidewalk outside of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) after museum officials forced the removal of Confederate Battle Flags from the portico of the Confederate Memorial Chapel.

One cannot truly appreciate the history and significance of the Chapel, nor the degree of desecration committed when museum leadership, driven by their own misguided prejudice and ignorance, removed the flags, without knowing the (personal) stories of the men who built the Chapel, worshiped in it every Sunday, and gathered each time the bell tolled, to pay their respects to and honor their comrades, as one by one, the Veterans passed over to eternity.

For many of our Flaggers, this fight is about more than just defending our Heritage against yet another unwarranted and unprovoked attack. For those whose veins course with the blood of the men who actually had a connection to the Old Soldiers' Home, it is personal...

Moses Drury Hoge — Confederate Chaplain

Moses Drury Hoge may not have been a soldier, but his importance to the veterans of the R.E. Lee Camp, No. 1 Soldiers' Home cannot be denied.

Born in 1818 in the oldest building at Hampden Sydney College in Prince Edward County, Virginia, he was the son of college president Moses Hoge, who moved his family to Ohio so he could study there when his son was 2. After his father's death, young Moses, then 15, was sent to live with an uncle in North Carolina. He went on to attend Hampden Sydney and graduated as class valedictorian, becoming the assistant to Dr. Plumer in Richmond's First Presbyterian Church after college. Though the two became lifelong friends, Moses decided to start a separate church, Second Presbyterian on Fifth Street, in 1845. That same year, he discovered that the U.S. Army in Mexico needed chaplains, so he immediately volunteered.

In 1860 the Hoges moved to a house at the corner of Fifth and Main Streets, where they entertained many distinguished visitors, including Jefferson Davis, Alexander Stephens, Robert E. Lee, Joseph Johnston, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, and more.

Rev. Moses Hoge was an abolitionist who supported secession from the Union and the radical Republicans who controlled it. At the start of the War Between the States, Gov. John Letcher appointed him to the Council of Chaplains. Moses preached to over 100,000 men during the war and was a favorite of the Stonewall Brigade. Cpl. James P. Smith wrote, ".... but the prayer, with far-reaching distinctness and with appeal and tenderness went up through the open skies to the God of so many fathers and mothers, to the great captain of our salvation, and went down into the hearts of those boys in gray, and tears were on many faces and strong desires in many hearts."

After the Seven Days Battles, Gen. Jackson himself went to Second Presbyterian to hear Moses preach. Small wonder that Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens appointed Moses "Honorary Chaplain" of the Confederate Congress. He opened congressional sessions with prayer 44 times, far more than any other minister. He also accompanied President Davis and his cabinet during the evacuation of Richmond. In Danville, he found Secretary of State Benjamin walking the streets without a room and took him to his own lodging.

By May, 1865 Moses returned to Richmond, depressed. "To me it seems that our overthrow is the worst thing that could have happened for the South and the worst thing that could have happened for the North, and for the cause of constitutional freedom and of religion on this continent," he wrote. "But the Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens and his kingdom ruleth overall ..." Later, Moses admitted to having lost $30,000-$40,000 during the war.



Moses returned to his job as pastor of Second Presbyterian church but was not forgotten by the Confederate veterans. On May 8, 1887, he dedicated the Confederate Memorial Chapel at the Robert E. Lee Camp No.1 Soldiers Home. He preached there often, also speaking at the dedications of the Lee and Jackson monuments. When Moses was 80, he was injured in a streetcar accident but never recovered. He passed away on January 6, 1898 and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery across from the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler.

Over 100 years after Moses Drury Hoge entered his eternal rest, his young cousin is determined that his sacrifice, courage and devotion to God and country will not be forgotten, as he forwards the Colors in his memory, and in protest of those who have desecrated the Confederate Memorial Chapel and the hallowed ground on which it rests, and dishonored our gallant Confederate Veterans.

The COUNTDOWN 'TIL Lee-Jackson Day/Flagging Lexington 2015.

For the third year, the Va Flaggers will gather in Lexington for the Lee-Jackson holiday weekend.

Friday, January 16th is the Virginia State Holiday for Lee-Jackson Day, and Saturday, January 17th is officially recognized as Lee-Jackson Day in Lexington.

The Virginia Flaggers will flag the town of Lexington for action taken by City Council to ban ALL flags (except the US Flag, Va State Flag and non-existent city flag) from city light pole flag stands, rather than allow the flags of Lee and Jackson to fly for the week leading up to the State holiday, ANDWashington & Lee University for actions taken by President Ruscio to desecrate the LEE Chapel by removing battle flags from the Lee Mausoleum in response to the demands of 6 agitators/students.

Join us, as we "take it to the streets" to let the folks in Lexington and Washington & Lee University know that there are still many of us who honor Lee and Jackson and will not go away quietly in the face of these unwarranted and discriminatory attacks.

We will flag all day Friday, participate in memorial services and the parade on Saturday, and flag Saturday afternoon/evening. We welcome all those interested in standing with us to attend Friday, Saturday, or both days.

Va Flaggers: Mechanicsville Rotary/Ruritan Christmas Parade

On Sunday, December 7th, the Virginia Flaggers will once again participate in the Mechanicsville Rotary/Ruritan Christmas Parade. This is a wonderful Richmond area tradition, with over 100 units participating in the two mile route, drawing huge, Confederate friendly crowds.

We would like to invite you to join us, as we forward the colors, represent our Confederate ancestors, and help ring in the Christmas season!

Otherwise, you will need to be dropped off at the staging area, or walk from the Rec Center parking area. There will also be shuttle buses running to the staging area.

The parade's theme is "Memories of Christmas". If you have period attire, please consider wearing it, or adding a Christmas touch to street clothing. Participants will have the option of walking with flags, or riding on a flat bed trailer/float with seating.

150th ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE OF GRISWOLDVILLE, GEORGIA

(Macon - November 20, 2014) In one of the most heroic stands of the War for Southern Independence, the Georgia militia, consisting mainly of old men and young boys, attempted to halt Sherman's march to the sea at Griswoldville right outside of Macon. This Saturday there will be a special ceremony commemorating the 150th anniversary of the courageous stand at Griswoldville.

Griswoldville had been the site of one of the few gun factories in the south during the War, but now Union troops had burned virtually everything in their path.

On November 22nd, 1864, the Georgia militia faced off against an entire brigade of federal soldiers, plus cavalry and artillery. Throughout the day, Georgia forces made one daring charge after another against the Union line; but each time, canister fire from the Yankee artillery cut the valiant sons in grey to pieces.

The men and boys of the Georgia milita fought with inferior weapons and supplies until they were forced to retreat; but their bravery has become a legacy for all Georgia veterans of the War. A monument was erected in their honour in 2012.

This Saturday there will be a special ceremony commemorating the 150th anniversary of the courageous stand at Griswoldville.

The Jarrell Plantation Historic Site, the 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Co. G, "The Jackson Rifles", and The Camp of the Unknown Soldier, SCV Camp # 2218, of Clinton, Jones County, Georgia, cordially invite one and all to the annual Griswoldville Battle Commemorative Service on Saturday, November 22, 2014.

A living history program will begin at 9:30am with the commemoration at 12:00 noon.

Guest speaker will be Pastor John Weaver.

THE EVENT IS NOT HELD AT JARRELL PLANTATION. IT WILL BE ON THE ACTUAL GRISWOLDVILLE BATTLEFIELD.

Griswoldville Battlefield is located east of Griswoldville in Twiggs County, Georgia, 10 miles east of Macon via U.S. 80 and Ga. Hwy. 57 towards Gordon on Baker Road.

Va Flaggers: W&L Chapel Desecration Update - An Anonymous Letter

Occasionally, we receive letters such as the one below, with no return address or signature. This particular one is so full of misinformation and false statements, that we decided to share it and our reply here, in the hopes that the "anonymous" author, and anyone else who may have been misled, might see it and be educated.

The author's comments are in black, our responses in red...

"I was on the W&L campus this weekend. I saw your people at the entrance to the Chapel lot and I saw the little flyer you were handing out in different places." Good to hear! Nice work, Flaggers! :)

"My great great grandfather fought for the Confederacy and was killed at Petersburg." God bless him! What SCV Camp or UDC Chapter to you belong to?

"Yours is a sad and puzzling effort. Let's get the fact straight.
1) There were NO flags in the Chapel for 60 years after Lee died, and no evidence that Lee wanted flags there". We are not sure what facts you are "straightening" here. We have never heard anyone claim there were flags in the Chapel before 1930 and do not dispute that fact. You claim there is no evidence that Lee wanted flags there. We assert that there is also no evidence that Lee DID NOT want flags there, despite what the Chapel docents have been instructed to tell visitors.
"2) The real flags were there for 60 years from 1930 until about 1990, NOT until 2014, as your brochure so incorrectly states." Actually, it was 1995 when the original flags were removed for preservation and restoration, as they certainly should have been, and reproductions were secured and put in their place, as they certainly should have been. Our brochure states that the reproduction flags were removed in July of 2014, which is correct.
"3) They were removed over 20 years ago by the MOC because they were deteriorating. In their place, W&L got some commercial knock off/replica flags which have no more historical value than something I could buy in an Alabama K Mart." As stated before, we have no issue with the arrangement, made in 1993 between the University, the UDC, and the Museum formerly known as the Museum of the Confederacy, to restore and preserve the original flags. However, you, Sir or Madame, are greatly misinformed if you believe the replica flags that were carefully placed were something that one could purchase at a department store.

As can be seen in the above photo, the flags were custom made to precisely replicate the unit flags that were removed for restoration. They were and are of great "significant historical value", and as the flags of several units who fought under General Lee, completely appropriate as displayed in the mausoleum.
4) W&L has removed these knock offs and is getting Real battle flags on loan from the MOC (now known as the American Civil War Museum). Yes, W&L has removed the replicas, but it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the plan to restore and preserve the original battle flags, which was a project started by former President Elrod, NOT President Ruscio. Removing the replica flags was NEVER a part of that project, and is completely unrelated. The flags were removed in capitulation to the demands of 6 W&L Law Students who threatened "Civil Disobedience" if the flags were not removed. University officials have used the (1993!) agreement as a smokescreen to cover for this fact, and, apparently there are those like you who have swallowed the spin... hook, line, and sinker.
4) Those flags WILL be available for viewing and education in the Lee Chapel Museum; anyone who wants to see them can see them. Bravo! We are happy to hear that the 1993 agreement and project is (apparently) coming to completion. The Virginia Flaggers will be the first in line to get a look at the flags if/when they appear in the museum. The conclusion of this project, however, had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE REMOVAL OF THE REPLICA FLAGS IN 2014. The removal was a capitulation to the demands and blackmail of 6 students who the university obviously failed in their duty to instruct in the character and honor of Robert E. Lee.

These are the indisputable facts. On the contrary, your assertions have been clearly disputed above. How is it possible that The Flaggers think there is a crisis and that anyone other than you is or should be outraged? For starters, there are the thousands of letters, phone calls, and emails from outraged citizens, students, and alumni that the University has received since the blackmail letter was received in April. Anyone with Confederate blood in their veins who is NOT outraged by this desecration is not worthy of his/her heritage, in our humble opinion. You are accusing W&L of desecrating Lee's grave when his remains are on the floor below the room with his statue?! Yes, we are. The mausoleum above the grave is clearly intended as an extension of his final resting place. You are now calling Robert E. Lee IV out of line? Actually, what we said was we are disappointed that he would privately believe that removal of the flags was ok, and saddened that he would allow himself to be used by the University as a means to cover their deeds. We stand by both statements. His blood line is certainly one to be honored, but it is does not allow that he is free from criticism when it is due. People south and north are laughing at you. Oh...well in THAT case... (Sorry, couldn't hold back the sarcasm.) We do what we do because we believe it is right. No amount of scorn, especially from folks who have no clue what has happened, and no understanding of our heritage, will stop us. You are feeding those who think the old and new South if full of reactionary nuts. One man's "reactionary nut" is another man's Patriot, and I know on which side my ancestors and I stand on. Please devote your time to something logical and productive. You saw us and received and read a flier...sounds pretty productive to me. End your carnival act in Lexington. No. Believe it or not, there are those of us who refuse to be silenced by silly threats and PC hogwash. We will not go away quietly and act like nothing has happened. We will continue to do everything in our power to spread the truth of what has happened at W&L, and hold Ruscio and the administration responsible for their despicable act.
